Benjamin Kobler

The pianist and synthesizer-player Benjamin Kobler was born in 1973 in Munich (Germany). At the age of 5 he began his studies of piano and cello and subsequently of composition.

His important piano-teachers have included C. Piazzini (Karlsruhe), G. Pludermacher (Paris) and P.-L. Aimard (Cologne). In addition to completing a full artistic diploma and a concertexamen in Piano Performance he also advanced his studies in the interpretation of modern solo and chamber repertoire whith P. Eötvös.

As a soloist his appereances have included Berlin (3rd Rachmaninoff-concerto), Cologne (Kurtág: „ ...quasi una fantasia... “), Paris (Messiaen: „Des canyons aux étoiles...“) and Seoul. Further on he performed whith the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra, SWR-Orchestra and WDR-Orchestra, whith such conductors as Myung-Whun Chung, Dennis Russel Davies, Peter Eötvös and Reinbert de Leeuw.

He has also often collaborated whith the preeminent Ensembles in Germany like Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt) and Musik-Fabrik (Cologne).

He participated for the first time in 1998 in the Stockhausen-Courses (Kürten) and subsequently he performed in concerts there in the works Schlagtrio, Kreuzspiel, 3XRefrain 2000, The Piedpiper, Stop and Start and numerous Piano-pieces. He also participated in the first performance of High-Times in Gran-Canaria and in the Philharmonie of Cologne. He played in recordings for the Stockhausen-verlag in the works 3XRefrain 2000, The Piedpiper and Stop and Start. Since 2003 he is teaching the piano-class at the Stockhausen-Courses Kürten.

Benjamin Kobler has played numerous first performances of works by O. Finnendahl, O. Neuwirth, M. Pintscher, E. Poppe and H. Pousseur. V. Baltakas dedicated to him the piece „Pasaka – a fairy tale“.


Some Festivals he has appeared in are Pianofestival Ruhr, Festvial Musica (Strasbourg), Schleswig-Holstein-Festival, Berliner Festwochen, Festival Acoustica (London), Donaueschinger Newmusicdays, Musica-viva (Munich). He has made CD recordings of works by O. Finnendahl, F. Hummel, S. Reich, S. Wolpe and has also worked extensively for the radio.
